Francisco de Zurbaran was a Spanish artist, and was rarely heard of outside of his home country. Zurbaran was born in Fuente de Cantos (Estremadura) into the family of a petty merchant. His professional training he received in Seville in 1616 in the atelier of Pedro Diaz da Villanueva. Francisco later settled near his birthplace to paint a large number of religious images for the monasteries and churches.
