Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798 - 1861). Born to a silk-dyer and originally named Yoshizo, Kuniyoshi was born in 1798. He studied with the artist Kuninan, and was admitted to Toyokuni's art studio in 1811. Producing portraits of actors, followed by a number of triptychs, he started a series - the Suikoden (Hundred and Eight Chinese Heroes), which took him on towards success. Cats were his favourite animal, and he kept many in his studio (which inspired a number of his works). Suffering from illness and depression he died in Edo, in 1861.
