Camille Felix Bellanger was born in Paris, France in 1853 at the beginning of the Second Empire, (an era when Napoleon III ruled France, and Baron Haussmann, the architect who created much of Paris' style and charm, was appointed Prefect of the Seine) It was a time when the Beaux-arts style in both painting and architecture were in full flow. Bellanger?s early life remains fairly obscure. He was known to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts by the early 1870s, presumably after the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. There is no record of Bellanger?s involvement in the war, although he would have been of an age to perform his military service at the time.
