William Blake was born in London, England in 1757, to James Blake (a hosier) and Catherine. From his early childhood, William Blake spoke of having visions. At the tender age of four he was reported to have seen God "put his head to the window"; at nine, whilst wandering the countryside, he saw a tree filled with angels. Although his parents tried to discourage him from telling stories, they did observe that he was different from his peers and so did not force him to attend a traditional school. Instead Blake learned to read and write at home. At age ten, Blake expressed a desire to become an artist, and with his parents' blessing, went to study drawing. Two years later, Wililam began writing poetry. When he turned 14, he apprenticed with an engraver because art school was too expensive. One of Blake's assignments as an apprentice was to sketch the tombs at Westminster Abbey, exposing him to a variety of Gothic styles from which he would draw inspiration throughout his life.
