The River Llugwy (Afon Llugwy as it is known in Wales) is a tributary of the River Conwy with its source located at Ffynnon Llugwy, a lake in the Carneddau range of mountains in Snowdonia (one of three national parks within Wales, sourced at 800metres, just above the remote lake of Ifynnon liugwy.A typical annual rainfall within Llugwy is the highest recorded in England and Wales. For the most part, the Llugwy follows the pathof the A5, winding through the village of Capel Curig before flowing towards the famous Swallow Falls (in Betws-y-Coed). The section of the Afon Llugwy between Swallow Falls and Betwsy-Coed represents the response of the river to the headward extension of the River Conway. Within the beautiful Welsh village of Betws-y-Coed it is crossed by the Miner's Bridge, an fascinating steep-inclined wooden bridge crossing over the river, and is shortly after passing under Pont-y-pair road bridge it flows alongside the main road before its confluence with the Conwy at distant end of the local golf course.
The word Afon is the typical word used to mean ?river?. English tourists tend to use the word is avon, such as the river Avon in Warwickshire.Salmon have bred in the Llugwy river for countless centuries, but spring running fish were first introduced only in 1920. Ten years later these fish continue to return to the river in the months of April and May. In 2011, Welsh water treated with an excess sewage problem in the River Llugwy, following years of campaigning by local anglers.
For those who enjoy canoeing there is a nice 45 minute route starting below Swallow Falls. You can park at the Swallow Falls hotel to access the river, and you can then follow the route to Miner?s Bridge.
The pool on the Afon Llugwy at Pont y Pair bridge, Betws y Coed, Conwy County, North Wales. After a heavy downpour the Llugwy can become a violent torrent, but in the summer season it is usually a tranquil and serene area for enjoying food and drink, and the source of many beautiful walks from the village of Betws y Coed. The river bank also provides a wonderful tourist spot for fish and chips, for sale at the Pont y Pair Fish and Chip Shop adjacent to the bridge.
